HereS/Permeable Practices

HereS is a communal research methodology that uses improvisational movement as a means of examining how public spaces are already “choreographed” by many intersecting systems. In HereS practices, participants investigate overlaps, frictions, gaps, and interdependencies between public and private space choreographies from a variety of frames, and practice “thinking physically” about how we are shaped by and shaping the spaces we inhabit. The specific activities of HereS practices fluctuate according to the demands of the site being considered and the interests of the participants, but generally unfolds in four phases: tuning, noticing, moving, and reflecting. For more information about HereS practices, see HereS ZINE 1 or HereS ZINE 2.

*HereS is a collaboration with Katie Schetlick, Brandin Steffensen, and many co-participants.

Sample Scores

Tuning + Noticing: Consider the messages you are receiving from this site. How is it calling/commanding/inviting you? Asking you to be in physical/emotional/psychic relation to other bodies (present and absent)? How are these messages transmitted? Are the messages universally applicable or do they land differently on different bodies in the space? Try to imagine which messages you may not be hearing.

Moving: Stage a subtle intervention/micro-transgression of these choreographic imperatives. Take a solo. Play at the edge of disobedience (but take care!) What are the risks and benefits to obeying these messages? How do the risks and benefits change from person to person?

Reflecting: Move through what you have observed/experienced in order to share those insights with others. Mobilize aspects of a fictional alternative to what you have experienced.
